Green Monday at Columbia University!

September 04, 2014

We are excited to announce the launch of Green Monday at Columbia University. Green Monday is a global sustainability initiative founded by a Columbia alumnus, David Yeung (SEAS ’98). The initiative is designed to promote green lifestyle choices one day a week with the goal of reducing individual carbon footprint and negative impact on the environment over time. Columbia is the first University in the United States to join the effort.

At Columbia, Green Monday will focus on four themes including recycling, food and paper waste reduction, and energy conservation. Weekly tips and challenges for our undergraduate residential community will make it easy and fun to incorporate environmentally-friendly habits into daily routines. Green Monday is sponsored by the Office of Sustainability, Columbia Dining, Housing, EcoReps, and RHLO (Resident Hall Leadership Organization).

9/8 Pledge Drive

Green Monday will kick-off with a pledge drive on Monday, September 8th at 5:00pm in front of John Jay Hall. Together with department partners, the EcoReps will be on site to educate students on going green. Students can enjoy free food, win prizes, take the Go Green Monday pledge in person, and receive a free Green Monday t-shirt and bracelet.

Ongoing Participation and Prizes

Every Monday throughout the academic year, there will be pop-up events around campus including a residence hall recycling roadshow and plate-scrapings in John Jay Dining hall.

Students are encouraged to take an online pledge to show their support and commitment. Prizes will be randomly awarded for those who share on Facebook and to students who participate in online Instagram challenges.

Green Monday bracelets will be available at the pop-up events and at the Hartley Hospitality Desk throughout the year for all CC/SEAS students. Students who wear their Green Monday bracelet on Mondays as a reminder to go green will enjoy a $.99 regular coffee at Café 212 plus a 10% discount on specific Bookstore purchases (excludes textbooks, computer related items, Nooks, tablets and electronics). One lucky student will win a Fitbit for being spotted around campus with their bracelet.
