Morningside Campus Energy Audits

In September 2005, independent energy technicians swept through 31 buildings on the Morningside campus, identifying opportunities ripe for energy savings. Examining more than 4 million square feet of classroom, lecture hall, scientific-lab, office and mechanical space, the analysts catalogued old equipment ready for mechanical upgrading or replacement. Those improvements will be implemented throughout 2006 coupled with regular building maintenance.

Further, the energy usage for each building was calculated and analyzed to identify waste and conservation options. The analysis has been entered into a University-wide energy and utility accounting system that includes information on residence halls as well. The system keeps track of electric, natural gas, steam and chilled water use, and will soon expand to include water and fuel oil. It gives the engineers who review University systems a management tool to identify problems early and track energy expenses.

Con Edison, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, and other agencies that look for ways to relieve the energy burden on consumers funded all of these energy conservation projects.
