Water Conservation

Dual Flush Handles

Columbia is upgrading their equipment to include water-saving dual flush handles on toilets, which can save up to half of a gallon of water per flush, and water-saving urinals, which use only one pint of water per flush, compared with the one gallon of water used in the previous model.

High Efficiency Washing Machines

Columbia has transitioned to high-efficiency, coinless washing machines in laundry rooms in the University Apartment Housing buildings. These high efficiency washers save around 17 gallons of water per cycle, or 8.5 million gallons of water per year. The front-loading aspect of these washers reduced waters and utility use by approximately half, when compared with top-loading machines.

Domestic Pump Station

In East Campus, a domestic pump station was added to improve water supply and minimize energy load through more efficient equipment.
